Turns out a Canadian seedstock producer in Saskatchewan was hit by a freak event last week involving lightning storms in his purebred Charolais herd. Stephen Wielgosz told the a Saskatoon radio station about finding 18 cows all dead under a tree that was struck by lightning in the storm.

Wielgosz said some of the cattle lost "were the most valuable cows in the herd." In his working years he'd never seen so many cattle taken out by a single lightning storm. The lost cattle were nine cows and nine calves -- none of them pairs. He estimated the total loss at $40,000.
