In August, President Obama announced a new USDA program that would assist producers hit hard by this year’s drought, by purchasing meat commodities. The plan is to buy $100 million of pork, $50 million of chicken, $10 million each of lamb and catfish. Obama said federal agencies would buy and hold the meat for later use, while boosting price supports for those producers.

Just over 67 percent of respondents called it “A foolish idea that doesn’t provide relief in feed prices.”

Just over 21 percent said it was “A worthy idea, but it should have included beef.”

Another 11 percent said it was “A solid plan that can help bolster prices.”
