When asked what readers thought about the 2012 BSE discovery and what it says about the livestock inspection system, a majority of respondents said USDA has a solid handle on the issue.

The question posed: “What does the recent discovery of BSE in a California cow say about the industry?”

Just under 50 percent of respondents said “Inspectors have better control on BSE than ever before and the threat is minimal.

Another 16 percent said, “We dodged a bullet and urgently need a traceability system for U.S. beef cattle.”

But another segment, around 39 percent, went with the middle ground, saying “Somewhere in between. The system worked this time, but we still need vigilance.”
