Range and pasture management workshop slated for Nov. 29 in Eldorado

The workshop which starts at 8:30 a.m., is a joint effort among the AgriLife Extension offices in Schleicher, Sutton and Crockett counties.

“This workshop will be all about drought and drought management strategies,” said Anthony Munoz, AgriLife Extension agent in Schleicher County. “The workshop has been prompted mainly by the drought and subsequent demand for hay that is scarce and extremely expensive this year. Virtually all the talks will feature some facet on ways to manage livestock and ranch country through the historically severe drought.

“Talks will include observations on how the drought affects insect pests. Some pests may be hurt by the dry weather and some may actually benefit from it.

“Dr. Chris Sansone, AgriLife Extension entomologist at San Angelo, will give his thoughts on what the drought’s effects on insects might mean for not only next season’s forages and crops, but also for landscapes and homes.

“Dry weather hasn’t slowed the influx of feral hogs," said Pascual Hernandez AgriLife Extension agent in Sutton County.

“We’ve been making an effort to address some aspect of feral swine at several workshops lately, because of the growing problem they’ve become here.

Dr. Pete Fincher with the Texas Animal Health Commission at Lampasas will be the speaker addressing the feral hog issue.”

Other workshop topics and their presenters will include: Evaluating Hay/Forage Quality, Drs. David Drake and Calvin Trostle, AgriLife Extension agronomists from San Angelo and Lubbock respectively; Pesticide Laws and Regulations, Cory Pence, Texas Department of Agriculture, San Angelo; and Brush Control During Drought and Herbicide Techniques and Calibration, Dr. Bob Lyons, AgriLife Extension range specialist, Uvalde.

Five Texas Department of Agriculture continuing education units - two integrated pest management, one laws and regulations, one drift and one general - will be available.

Individual preregistration is $20 before Nov. 23 and $25 thereafter.
